When information is the scarce resource, producers compete on quality and accuracy. You buy the newspaper that gives you the most reliable account of what happened. You subscribe to the journal that publishes the most rigorous research. Quality is the competitive advantage because the consumer’s bottleneck is access to content.
When attention is the scarce resource, producers compete on engagement. You don’t need the most accurate account; you need the most compelling one. You don’t need the most rigorous research; you need the most shareable finding.
Engagement — clicks, time on page, shares, comments, return visits — is the metric that matters because it’s the metric that translates directly into revenue.
