Chapter 2: GNU Screen - The Venerable Elder

In which we meet the grandfather of terminal multiplexers and discover it’s still surprisingly spry

A Brief History Lesson

GNU Screen emerged in 1987, a time when:

  • The Internet was still ARPAnet’s rebellious teenage phase

Created by Oliver Laumann and Carsten Bormann, Screen was originally developed to solve a simple problem: “What if I want to do multiple things but only have one terminal?” This was the 80s equivalent of having too many browser tabs open, except closing the wrong one could mean losing hours of work.
